what is kukrā? *

Kukrā is currently me, in my utility room, roasting delicious coffee on a 1kg roaster. I’m a complete beginner when it comes to roasting coffee, but I’ve been working with the stuff for nearly half my life. So I hope I know how to tell the difference between a good cup and a bad one.

I will never sell anything on here that I wouldn’t drink myself and that I wouldn’t be happy serving to any coffee professionals.

This whole project is going to be a massive learning experience for me, but bear with me and I promise you it will be worth it.

what does kukrā mean?

Kukrā is the Celtic word for the town of Cockermouth, the home of this project. Cockermouth is located at the mouth of the river Cocker, a windy stretch of water which meanders it’s way through the beautiful Lake District national park. The decision was made for me to start roasting coffee whilst camping on a fell named Haystacks, right at the source of the river Cocker. Kukrā means ‘crooked’, probably summing up the journey that got me into roasting. Spending my whole life to now living in Cockermouth, the name seemed fitting.

what am i using?

I am currently sourcing all green beans via Green Coffee Collective. As a small batch roaster, this provides me a viable way to purchase greens in smaller quantities. Read more about them here.

As I expand, I am excited to build personal relationships with some of the amazing producers all over the world.

My current roaster is an Aillio Bullet R1. A super well equipped 1kg roaster, great for me to start out on, whilst giving me the control to really fine tune my roasting style.
